Crochet free hot pad patterns
One of the most useful things you can crochet are potholders! By using 100% cotton yarn and a dense double-thick stitch, crochet hot pads will work up fast and make great gifts.
Fun holiday designs, simple solid colors or whimsical shapes will inspire you and they are fun to crochet.
When looking for a crochet hot pad or crochet pot holder pattern always check that it is a double thickness or you won’t get heat protection. Single thickness is great for display, I have two I hang for aesthetic reasons (as shown in this image), and perhaps can use to lift a warm lid from a pot but never to hold a hot dish from the oven. You will burn yourself. I don’t want anyone to have a burned hand!
Always use 100% cotton for kitchen items to ensure your project is heat safe. Acrylic or acrylic cotton blends hold heat and will melt, warp or even catch fire!

Crochet cat hot pads
These cat hot pads always make me smile when I look at them. They feature a pocket to slip your hand into as well as a built-in hanger to keep them in reach. I love a self-hanging potholder and when I design potholders I always include a hanger.
What a cute gift idea these are too! See more crochet patterns for cat lovers.
Written for beginner- intermediate skill level (what is your crochet skill level see the chart) this crochet potholder is made with a 5.5 mm crochet hook and category 4 cotton yarn in multiple colors depending on which cat you’re making. Striped thermal stitch crochet pot holder set
To me the thermal stitch is a very traditional stitch for potholders because it is a natural double thick stitch and it is beautiful.
The thermal stitch has beautiful flexibility while also being tight, and dense and doesn’t droop, drape or stretch out. (see this post on five types of no-stretch crochet stitches)
This set is designed so that the striped version is a bit larger than the solid one so you know visually which one you may want to grab when it’s time to move a hot pot.
There is a wood ring worked directly into the design so it can hang nearby just ready to reach for when the time comes.
These are made with mercerized cotton but you can use regular crafters cotton to make them.

Big fish crochet potholder
This whimsical and large double-thick crochet potholder is one of my most popular designs. A round “hook” is worked into the mouth so it hangs easily and it is a fun conversation piece on display in your kitchen.
They clock in a 14″ long to give great hand and wrist protection for transferring larger pots and casseroles from the oven to another surface. I cook a lot and have long hands so big-sized crochet hot pads are always on my mind for every potholder design I create.
There is a zebra fish and clown fish , each is a different free pattern because the stitches are different, however the size is the same.
