Must have tools for the everyday crafter
Your project bag isn’t just for yarn and hooks—it’s your mobile creative studio. Whether you’re stitching on the go or setting up for a cozy evening at home, keeping the right essentials in your bag can make your crochet time smoother, more enjoyable, and even more inspiring.
Here are seven must-have items every crocheter should keep close at hand:

1. Your Go-To Hooks
Always keep at least one or two of your most-used hook sizes in your project bag. If you’re working on a specific project, include the hook you’re using and a backup—just in case one goes missing in the couch cushions.
2. Small, Sharp Scissors
A compact pair of yarn scissors makes trimming ends and snipping tangles quick and easy. Bonus points for folding or protective caps to keep your fingers (and your yarn) safe.

3. Stitch Markers
Whether you’re marking rounds, shaping rows, or just noting a key spot, stitch markers are a must. Toss in a mix of locking markers and rings so you’re ready for anything.

4. A Yarn Needle or Two
Finishing touches matter. A yarn needle makes weaving in ends or seaming pieces seamless (pun intended). Keep at least one in a small pouch or zip pocket so it doesn’t disappear. You may want to keep a few types of tapestry needles to accommodate different yarn thicknesses.
5. Tape Measure
Crochet is full of measurements—gauge checks, garment sizing, or making sure your blanket isn’t shrinking. A flexible tape measure fits easily in your bag and saves time on guesswork.
6. Pattern Notes or Journal
Whether printed, scribbled, or digital, having your pattern on hand keeps you on track. A small notebook can also be a handy space to jot down color changes, row counts, or yarn substitutions on the fly.

My project pattern trackers come in regular and large print. They are in a handy 6 x 9″ size to fit in most project bags.
Space for notes, yarn type, pattern name, date, + color and stitch changes for each row.

7. Comfort Extras
Don’t forget the little things that keep your crochet time relaxing: a lip balm, hand cream, blue light glasses, a magnifying neck lamp or neck light for dark yarn, or even a calming tea sachet. These small comforts make your bag feel more like a creative retreat than just storage.

A well-stocked project bag is more than practical—it’s an invitation to create wherever you are. Take a few minutes to gather your favorites, and you’ll be ready to crochet anytime inspiration strikes.
