You bought a bag of wooden craft rings, now what?
Are you looking to add a unique twist to your crochet projects? One versatile and fun way to elevate your creations is by incorporating wood craft rings of various sizes.
I recommend these in so many of my projects and I know you’re buying them. You make your project then have a bag of them still left. What’s a crafter to do?
These simple yet stylish rings can be used in countless ways to enhance your crochet work, adding both functionality and flair. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or just starting out, a mixed bag of different-sized wood craft rings can open up a world of creative possibilities.
From trendy bag handles and plant hangers to charming toys and home decor accents, these rings can help you create beautiful and practical items. In this blog post, I will explore a range of crochet projects I’ve designed that make the most of these versatile craft rings, providing tips and inspiration for how you can use them to add a touch of rustic charm to your handmade pieces.
Let’s dive in and discover the endless ways you can incorporate these wooden rings into your next crochet project!

Crochet handbag hardware
I always use hardware for my crochet bags to add that extra oomph that makes them feel store-bought, with all the details you find on designer bags. To me this means hardware.
But Stephanie, wood is not hardware. It is not but when wrapped like I have shown here in the crochet flower checkerboard granny square bag, it adds an extra element of visual interest as well as functionality as it serves as an anchor for the strap.

Crochet towel holder

This useful project works scrap yarn around a big wood ring then works into a strap that can be wrapped around a fridge handle, bathroom bar or oven door to keep your kitchen or bathroom towels in close reach.

Crochet potholder hanger

I love a self-hanging potholder. Not only are they beautiful on display but functional. My potholders are all designed to be a generous size to give hand and wrist protection. What is worse than a skimpy potholder when moving a hot pot or pan and it doesn’t cover your palm or fingertips well enough to stop that burn? Burn me once fool me, burn me twice foolish me for not making a bigger potholder!

Crochet Christmas ornaments

For this crochet star ornament, I used the smaller wood rings as a decorative accent that really gives loads of visual interest to the design. It makes a lovely transition from the size of the star to the decorative beads. I love how it turned out!

Crochet pan handle cover
I designed these handy stashbusters to replace my boring but functional former crochet iron skillet covers. Yes they are incredibly functional but we can have some style with our functional pieces. Enter the wood ring.
This free pattern starts from the ring and works in a tubular method to create a seamless design that slips onto whatever handle size you have. I have a very large all steel skillet that needs a much longer version of what you see here and it’s perfectly customizable.

Crochet Christmas towel holder

This is a cute little towel holder that matches the peppermint potholders shown further down in this list. You can adjust your rings based on what type of towel you use in your kitchen, this one uses a mid sized ring for a flour sack weight towel. For terry style towels go larger.

Crochet fish potholder
Another one of my hanging potholder designs (one of my most popular patterns in fact) is the fish potholder. These are very large and protective plus super adorable displayed on their fishhook “mouth” ring.
The original design uses the metal rings but I later have gone on to make several sets of them for gifts and use the wood rings from my set.

Crochet amigurumi eyes
I haven’t written a pattern for this Halloween cat but you can see how you can use a small wood ring wrapped with yarn, then accented with another color before putting in the safety eyes. It’s a style choice for a bolder design.

Christmas stocking hangers
The wood rings were the perfect way to attach the hang tags while also being a hanger for my coastal gingerbread cottage Christmas stockings. The hang tags are from the dollar tree they have great crafting items at the location I go to.

Crochet book sleeve
For this design, I turned the wood ring into a button closure for one style of my crochet iPad sleeve pattern. This falls into the “use what you have” rather than to keep buying more and I love how it turned out. I also used yarn on hand to design these both.

Christmas peppermint potholders
The cheery fun and BIG peppermint double thick hanging potholders also use small wood rings subtly worked into the wrapper edge so you can display them as part of your kitchen seasonal decor.

Easter egg crochet potholders with flowers
More hanging potholders! I just love them can you tell! I am so accustomed to hanging my potholders it doesn’t occur to me to make a style that isn’t self hanging.
