Modernizing the granny square handbag
A fresh modern granny square crochet back that mixes black and white with a touch of color for a feminine look.
The pattern starts with a crochet flower (see more crochet flower patterns here) then a traditional simple granny square stitch builds around it. The squares work up relatively quickly then you can get on to the assembling for a completed finished crochet handbag.
The finished bag as shown is a mid size bag approximately 12′ square.

Skill level to make crochet granny square bag
This is a basic granny square but it starts with the flower design, which is for a comfortable beginner. Once the “flower” is built up the granny square is crocheted into it using all double crochet. Check out this post on what is your crochet skill level if you have doubts.
The yarn is not cut, it is dropped back for color changes to minimize weaving ends, and cut ends poking out of your finished crochet project.

Supplies to make granny square crochet bag
You will need a few things to make this beautiful crochet bag.
- Category 4 yarn in 3 colors (flower color plus black and white)
- 4, 4.5 & 5 mm Crochet hooks
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- 2″ rings (I used rings from this set)
- button for closure optional buttons or beads for center of flowers (these are shown)
- Needle and thread for attaching adornments
The bag shown uses hobby lobby I love this cotton in black and white plus a peach and mauve color in my stash for the flowers.
How to work the granny square crochet shoulder bag
The bag is made simply of 4 squares attached, then handles are added with some simple crochet stitches. Wood rings are used as hardware to attach the strap and add additional visual interest and to give a more refined look from a classic granny square design.
This pattern uses single crochet, slip stitches and, front post double crochet and double crochet. Finishing techniques use needle and thread for the detail work that makes the bag look special and uniquely yours.
