Beyond meditation, how to chill out in 2024
Need to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life, chill out and find your calm? You don’t need to meditate or go to a spa to do it, and to be realistic, this style of relaxing isn’t suited to everyone, in fact some find it UNAPPEALING.
I do have tips on HOW to meditate for people who can’t calm their mind in this post.
If you still can’t get into it fear not, let’s take a look at some of the more surprising ways to chill out right now.

Relax with a video game
Yes, video games. Wait, what? Aren’t those supposed to amp you up rather than mellow you out? Not necessarily. Immersing yourself in a video game, or online play at www.fruityking.co.nz, can actually be a form of meditation. You’re so focused on nailing that jump or solving that puzzle that the rest of the world fades away, including whatever was stressing you out. It’s mindfulness with a joystick. And with the variety of games out there, you can choose your own adventure: from peaceful farming in Stardew Valley to the serene exploration of Journey. Gaming can be your digital zen garden, minus the actual gardening.

Turn doing nothing into a form of relaxation
Next on the list is the art of doing nothing, and yes, it’s an art form. In a society obsessed with productivity, giving yourself permission to just be is a radical act. Sit on your porch, stare out the window, watch the clouds roll by, and resist the urge to label it as “wasted” time. It’s not. It’s an act of self-care, a way to recharge your batteries without doing anything more strenuous than existing. Think of it as being a professional loafer. And the best part? No equipment is necessary.

Find something that makes you belly laugh
Ever heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine”? Well, it turns out there’s some truth to it. Laughing reduces stress, releases endorphins, and even boosts your immune system. So how do you get your giggle on? Watch a comedy, listen to a funny podcast, or go to a stand-up show. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try laughter yoga – yes, it’s a thing. It’s about laughing for no reason at all, and while it might sound bonkers, it’s surprisingly effective. Plus, you’ll probably make some new friends who are as crazy as you are.
No phone zone
In an age where we’re glued to our screens, creating a no-phone zone can be a game-changer. Designate an area in your home where digital devices are forbidden, and watch as it transforms into a stress-free sanctuary.
Use this space to read, doodle, crochet, or engage in any other non-digital hobby. It’s about disconnecting to reconnect with yourself and maybe even with others in your household. Remember those people? They’re pretty cool too.
Dance around in your loungewear
Last but certainly not least, when in doubt, dance it out. This works beautifully to relax because the benefits of music therapy and the benefits of movement are proven. Putting them together is an excellent way to chill out!
There’s something incredibly freeing about blasting your favorite tunes and dancing like nobody’s watching (because, hopefully, they aren’t but if they are who cars??). It’s a way to shake off the stress, get a little exercise, and just have fun. And the best part? Pajamas are completely acceptable attire. In fact, they’re encouraged.
