Materials to make a crochet poinsettia
For this project, to keep it elegant I used category 1 yarn. You can use any sport weight up to a category 2 for a similar look. thicker yarn will look a bit clunky and make a much too large bloom.
You will also need:
- Tapestry needle for finishing petals
- Styrofoam ball
- adhesive or hot glue to attach mini beads to the decorative center
- floral wire
- wreath or flower box
- 3″ decorative ribbon
- 3.25 crochet hook
- scissors
The yarn I used for this project is Hobbii Friends 8/4 cotton. Look for fingering weight, sport weight, sock yarn or category 1 or category 2 yarns, cotton is ideal but if you can’t locate it you can use a blend. Even Aunt Lydia’s fashion 3 thread if you’re in a pinch and that is all your craft store has. I used fashion thread for my crochet rose box shown below.
To fancy it up consider adding a thread of embroidery floss
You can expect your bloom to be approximately 11″ when working with category yarn, slightly larger with category 2 yarn.
To work with this proportion I recommend the following sized displays:

A 14″ wreath form in wire or styrofoam
Once you crochet enough of all three sized petals you will use stiff floral wire to attach it to your foam form. The petals are designed to be shapable without wire, wire is only used in the base to connect them to a center point.
Use a decorative ribbon to cover your form then connect the center ball and work the petals around it.
Crochet poinsettia table decor
For this display you will use something like a shallow bowl (display “vase” used for succulents) or as show, I used a flower box from a set I got on Amazon. it should be 6-7″ in circumference.
Fill the bottom with paper shreds, polyfill, yarn scraps or beads if using a glass vase.
Then use hot glue or other adhesive to decorate the top third of the styrofoam ball. Lay something over the vase or box filling to create a flat surface to support your bloom. Then begin to attach the petals from the bottom up, staggering them so they are offset from the round below. Twist and shape petals to your taste to create a dynamic look.
