This is a beginner-friendly crochet plaid blanket. This crochet plaid technique is common but what makes this a real eye catcher is the colors.
I am going to show you how to choose the right color combination and yarn selection to get this effect.

Choosing the right yarn for this project

The showstopper yarn needs to have an all over marbeled or marle look or a frequent color transition going no more than 2 yards between colors. The smaller your blanket the more frequent color transitions you need.
Avoid some ombre yarns like red heart because the color transition is not frequent enough for this style of blanket. The original caron cakes has this problem. Also look for smooth transitions between colors rather than abrupt starts and stops that will look disjointed.
Once you get your showstopper yarn, select complimenting colors in the same category but they don’t need to be the same brand.
See in these graphics how you can pick up colors in your showstopper yarn that complement it and will result in a stunning finished crochet plaid blanket.

Shown below is caron cloud cakes, this does not transition as frequently and should only be use for the largest sized blanket.

Creating the plaid
Once you work up the body of your blanket you will use a topstitching technique with a large eye tapestry needle in the opposite direction. This creates the plaid look.
I found the topstitching took as long as the body of the blanket (about 12-14 days total to create this 48 x 60″ blanket)
