How to use Caron Colorama Halo Yarn
If you love to work with soft cozy and inviting fuzzy yarns for knit or crochet blankets and scarves this may be a yarn for you!
This bulky-weight acrylic self striping yarn easily creates beautiful, approachable fashion pieces. With its luxuriously soft and textured feel, possibilities are endless.
Now that Caron Latte cakes is discontinued this is a good alternative. This yarn is a true Category 5 and Latte Cakes was listed as a Category 5 but really felt like a category 4.
Colorama Halo yarn is a blend of acrylic, polyester and nylon (71% Acrylic,18% Nylon,11% Polyester to be exact). Nylon gives it the soft fuzzy look and feel. It is less slippery than the more nylon-heavy latte cakes so it’s easier to work as you get better tension.
Stitching with this yarn still is a bit tricky as the fuzz hides stitches and stitch definition. Use it for projects that you want close to your body like shawls, blanket wraps and blankets. I don’t consider this a newbie yarn. You should be very comfortable working stitches and with yarn tension. The texture of this yarn makes stitches a bit more challenging to see.
What is your crochet skill level?
Because caron latte cakes is now discontinued this is a good alternative. I talk about latte cakes in this post, the pros and cons and how to make a tricky yarn work so you can enjoy why you were drawn to it in the first place. In this case, it is the texture and softness.
The best stitches for Colorama Halo yarn
For fuzzy thicker yarns like this, more exaggerated stitches are optimal so they can be seen. Simply stitches will lose nearly all definitions. Think texture, open spaces and post-style stitches or ribbing.
You can see in the above image I used a stitch with open spaces to show some design in a simple blanket wrap.
The yarn does have a 6 mm hook listed on the label but I strongly suggest going up 1-3 mm higher. A 6 mm hook will make the stitches tight and already hard to see, harder to work into.
