Realistic crochet tulips for a wreath or bouquet
Learn to make crochet tulips for this pretty spring-themed wreath. I used Dollar Tree craft supplies to keep the project affordable!
To make the wreath you will crochet tulips complete with leaves and attach them to a wreath made of floral foam. Coordinating ribbons bring additional visual interest making a stunning DIY spring wreath and helping you learn a new pattern working leaves with wire for shaping. I added stamens (Optional) for cake decorating so they may peek out like real flowers without the mess of pollen!
Great pet-safe floral decor. Use the tulip pattern to make bouquets if you prefer.

This pattern is beginner friendly but it is fiddly!

I am using category 3 yarn for this to make a more delicate looking flower but category 4 yarn will work just fine resulting in slightly larger bulbs.

Materials to make crochet tulips
- Category 3 cotton yarn
- 3.25 mm crochet hook (I use etimo hooks)
- Craft stamens (Optional – I am using these)
- floral wire and stem wire (I am using this one for the petals and leaves) I found stem wire 18″ at Joann.
- floral tape (dollar tree has a floral wire and tape set)
- floral foam wreath (shown in a 9.8″ Dollar tree floral department foam wreath)
- ribbon (shown is dollar tree ribbon)
- scotch tape or hot glue for securing petals) and pins to secure ribbon to floral foam
Yarn used in the project shown is Paintbox cotton dk in white and pansy purple (great color for flowers)
For this approximately 10″ wreath I have worked 7 flower stems . For a larger 12-16″ wreath I suggest using 9-11 stems. Some leaves were left standalone to stick in decoratively and not have them tied to a stem.
For the petals I cut each 14″ wire in half and it’s the perfect length for the petals. For the leaves leave the wire full length.
if using wire from a coil, cut a 7″ length for petals, 12-14″ for leaves

Crochet terms used in this pattern
US Terms: slpsts -slip stitch – sc – single crochet – hdc – half double crochet – dc – double crochet
Crochet tulip bulb pattern
This is worked around however each “side” is noted as a row.
slip knot – ch 14
Row 1: 1 sc in next until the end then add an additional sc in the last stitch. Continue working up next side and perform row 2.
Row 2: slpsts 2, sc – hdc – 4 dc – 2 hdc – 2 sc
Row 3: 2 sc – 2 hdc – 4 dc , hdc – sc , 2 slst
Row 4: sc all around the tulip with wire inserted at first stitch. Slip stitch in last stitch NOT over the wire, the slip stitch should be in between wire ends as shown.
Cut yarn – twist wire shut. Repeat to make 5-7 petals total per flower. Wrap tails smoothly around wire and secure with hot glue or small piece of scotch tape leaving the top 1/2″ uncovered as it will likely be exposed when wrapping the petals together.
If using stamens, secure at base of first petal with one of the wire ends before twisting it closed and wrapping yarn tail securely around it.
Crochet tulip leaves
For this I am using two different shades of green to create more dimension and visual interest.
You will need the full wire length for the leaves. 12-14″ if you are cutting wire from a coil or use the full length of the wire listed in the supplies.
I suggest having 3″ of the wire in front of the first stitch and bend it so it doesn’t work its way into the body as you crochet the first side.
Ch 28. Insert wire then work sc in second ch from hook. sc next, 2 hdc, 21 dc, 2 hdc , 3 sc in last turn and work 1 sc, 2 hdc, 21 dc, 2 hdc, 2 sc. leave a 4″ tail to create a long wrapped stem.
Assemble the spring wreath
Wrap main ribbon color around wreath and secure with tape, straight pins or hot glue. Leave 4-5 inches unwrapped and arrange flower and leaf stems working them around sides so they aren’t all inserted in the same location. This will keep the finished wrapping smooth and less bulky.
I used the second roll of Dollar tree purple polka dot ribbon to secure the florals then went back over it with Dollar Tree grosgrain white ribbon to lighten up the finished wreath. Try putting a bow on it if you like that look.
I cut up a leafy spring flower pick from dollar tree to add more visual interest to my wreath.
