Start by chaining an even number of chains.
In the second chain from your hook, work a slip stitch. HDC (half double crochet) in next. Continue to alternate slip stiches and HDC to the end of the row. Your last stitch will be a slip stitch.
Row 2: Chain two and turn your work . Chain two counts as a stitch (as a half double crochet). Make a slip stitch in the second stitch. Look at your stitches, one looks small and one looks larger.

You will always put the HDC in the small stitch and the slip stitch in the larger one. Continue to alternate to end of row, ending with a hdc.
Note: make sure when your work your slip stitches that the front slanted stitch created by the HDC from prior row remained untouched. Look above the row and see the v and work straight into it leave this angled stitch untouched as shown below.

Row 3: Chain one and turn your work . Chain one (does not count as a stitch) Slip stitch, then hdc. Repeat across row ending with a slipstich in the ch 2 from row 2.
Row three is what can trip you up so pay close attention to this tip:
Row 2 started with a ch 2 counts as hdc. Make sure you work your slip stitch into that at the end of row there where the blue arrow is pointing . It doesn’t look like a stitch so you can miss it and end up with a lopsided shrinking project!
