What is a mug cozy?
A crochet mug cozy is a handmade sleeve style project that wraps around a mug, helping to keep your drink warm while providing a layer of insulation from the yarn.
Typically crochet mug cozies are fastened with a button, strap, or tie for easy removal and cleaning. This simple Crochet Mug Cozy features two handle loops that securely wrap around your mug’s handle for a snug fit that is easy on and easy off.
This cozy is made to fit taller than the standard 5″ high mug. Think latte mugs, more artistic shaped mugs and those cute mugs with a 2D design that need a little more room to fit.
With endless possibilities for colors (hello yarn stash!) and embellishments, mug cozies make thoughtful gifts, craft fair makes, and add a charming, personalized handmade look to your beloved cup or cup collection.

Supplies to make an oversized crochet mug cozy
For this project you will need:

- Category 4 cotton yarn (heat safe) shown, Hobby Lobby I love this cotton in Gold and Terracotta
- 4 mm & 5 mm crochet hooks to work the stitches (Etimo red are my favorite)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Stitches used in this crochet project
Stitch terms to know to make this project:
- single crochet
- slip stitch
- double crochet
- single crochet two together
That’s it! Simple beginner friendly stitches. I find I can work one up in about 2 hours so it’s a quick make for gifts or to sell at craft shows. Just be sure customers know it’s for taller coffee mugs. An average sized mug will find the top rim covered by a ruffle making it hard to sip!

What are mug cozies used for?
If you’re new to the concept of a mug cozy (they are also great for soup mugs) here is the idea of why they are popular.
- Keep your hot drinks and soups hot (or warm) longer. They also are great for people with dexterity issues who can’t hold handles well with fingers and the body of the mug or soup bowl is too hot for the palm.
- Gift idea to make a simple mug more personal. Think holiday colors, home colors or work in some fancy embellishments like glass or wood beads to suit the style of the recipient.
- Great stash buster. Because these only use 65 yards of yarn (A typical skein of cotton yarn is about 180 yards) you can use up some of your leftover yarn.
