in this video I'm going to give you a
0:02
tutorial of how to make these beautiful
0:05
bookmarks you can make them with or
0:07
without The Fringe and there's lots of
0:10
texture for visual interest let's get
0:13
[Music]
0:24
started and so to make this pattern
0:26
you're going to need a 4 mm hook a light
0:29
worsted weight yarn so a thin category
0:32
for yarn generally most cotton will fall
0:35
into this I do prefer cotton for
0:38
something like this just because of the
0:40
wear and tear bookmark is going to get
0:41
going in and out of books uh it doesn't
0:44
pel up quite as easily as acrylic or
0:48
Blended Yarns do but you can use any um
0:53
any yarn you can go down to a category 2
0:56
or three um I would not use bulky if you
0:59
do use bul you're going to have a big
1:01
bookmark and you're going to need a
1:02
bigger wood ring now this wood ring is 1
1:06
in and 1 14 wide and the pattern is
1:09
designed to work with this size of a
1:11
ring now something else you're going to
1:13
find helpful is my favorite little
1:16
finishing tool the 2mm hook for the
1:19
Stitch we're going to be using and as I
1:20
get working you'll see why I do
1:22
recommend grabbing that if you have one
1:25
on hand if
1:27
not we'll figure out how to make it work
1:29
for
1:31
you and the wood beads are optional I
1:34
have these are from Dollar Tree and I'm
1:37
using the bigger of
1:39
the um two sizes that are in here might
1:42
be three but you need something big
1:44
enough so that the yarn will fit through
1:46
but again it's optional you do not have
1:48
to put Fringe on your hook or on your
1:51
I'm sorry your bookmark on your mark you
1:53
can just make it longer as long as you
1:56
like so the first step of course is to
1:59
work the yarn around the ring so you can
2:03
do a slip knot or knot um I use these so
2:06
much just personal preference how to do
2:08
it I'm not going to use a slip knot I
2:10
just don't like that bumpy look that the
2:13
slip knot has even though you can
2:15
certainly hide it I just won't I'll just
2:18
hook it on at like
2:20
such and keep working around and I'll
2:23
work the tail in as I go or work it
2:26
under I'm sorry not into there put it
2:29
under
2:34
and just smoothly and
2:36
evenly work your stitches to completely
2:41
and densely cover the
2:46
ring just like
2:56
this right I've completely covered my
3:02
ring and I'm going to go into the
3:04
starting Stitch and begin
3:07
working single crochets nine of them so
3:10
there's
3:13
one
3:17
2
3:21
3
3:24
4
3:27
5 six
3:36
7
3:40
8 nine oops eight on eight and
3:48
nine and that's going to be the length
3:52
that of just these nine stitches
4:02
all right so I've got a third row of
4:04
single crochet
4:05
worked and I'm going to start the design
4:09
or the
4:10
texture so we'll do a S chain one and
4:13
turn as you have been doing now the
4:15
first Stitch you will work a single
4:19
crochet then a half double crochet into
4:23
that same
4:25
Stitch then a double crochet into the
4:28
row below so let's look because this is
4:31
slanted a little bit with the Curve
4:33
don't worry about that it's going to
4:35
flare just slightly but you'll see um
4:38
with the finishing it'll all be totally
4:40
flush and even so don't let that worry
4:43
you that you've done something wrong you
4:45
have
4:48
not okay so let's see where's that row
4:51
below it's right here
5:00
so we want to get that dramatic look of
5:03
that kind of fishtail
5:06
crisscross and we've got to go down far
5:09
enough to get that to happen now because
5:11
three stitches were just worked into
5:14
this essentially same Stitch even though
5:16
it's a stitch below we need to make up
5:18
for that by skipping two stitches then
5:21
in that third Stitch we'll do it again
5:24
go in and work a single
5:26
crochet then a half double crochet
5:31
and then your double crochet below go
5:37
down and finish your Stitch skip two now
5:42
when you look to the end you'll do your
5:44
skip two to make sure you're far enough
5:46
over there should be two stitches and
5:49
then where you're going to work so you
5:50
want two stitches left at the
5:54
end skip my
5:56
two and do single crochet
6:01
half double
6:04
crochet and then the
6:08
long double crochet down below
6:16
whoops and keep it nice and loose you
6:18
don't want this
6:21
buckling and then single crochet in the
6:24
last
6:26
Stitch make sure I get both my loops on
6:28
the hook
6:35
chain one
6:38
turn and we do it again so this row
6:42
we're going to really look at Stitch
6:43
placement to make sure that everything's
6:45
lining up
6:47
correctly single crochet half double
6:50
crochet and then the first stitch for
6:53
the row below pull this out let's look
6:56
this is where a really Slim hook might
6:58
come in handy
7:01
need to
7:02
find the V for that row below and it
7:05
could be hard to get your regular hook
7:07
in
7:08
there CU you want to essentially split
7:10
it work in
7:12
between you're not going under you want
7:14
to go in
7:17
between going to yarn
7:25
over might be able to push through since
7:27
I was just working in there come
7:33
up and work my double crochet now
7:37
instead of skipping two you're going to
7:38
work into that space of where the two
7:42
stitches you skipped are so if you look
7:44
closely you can see there they
7:48
are so I'm going to take my hook and go
7:51
in there and work the single crochet
7:54
half double crochet oops I think I
7:57
grabbed something there I wasn't so
7:59
supposed to grab okay half double
8:02
crochet and then the
8:06
placement we're going to
8:08
look see the
8:11
grouping of
8:14
the single crochet and half double
8:16
crochet from the row before that's where
8:20
your double crochet will go so it's
8:23
going to be back to the right just a
8:25
little bit finish find that chain two or
8:30
not chain two the two Stitch Skip and
8:33
work the final one single crochet half
8:37
double
8:39
crochet double crochet look for the two
8:43
stitches right there that's where the
8:46
hook
8:49
goes and then skip over so that you
8:51
single crochet into the
8:56
last not too tight because we do have to
8:58
work into to that some point turn we'll
9:02
do it again single crochet in the
9:05
first half double crochet in the
9:08
first and let's find our Stitch it's
9:12
right there see that V that's where
9:14
we're going to go and put the double
9:17
crochet and you'll start to see that the
9:20
double crochet is lining up with the
9:23
next one where it
9:24
goes which it's going to be here and you
9:28
can see
9:30
here let me work it and then I'll show
9:31
you what I
9:33
mean can't show you something that
9:35
hasn't happened yet right okay there's
9:37
that two stitches that were skipped
9:40
single crochet half double
9:44
crochet and then double crochet into the
9:46
little grouping
9:49
there and you'll be able to
9:55
see that this will line up with this so
9:59
when you're working the Stitch and you
10:02
ever wonder where your little V is where
10:04
you're supposed to put your hook you can
10:06
just glance over to see where that
10:08
grouping is and let your eye
10:10
follow that that's where the placement
10:13
will
10:17
be and it can look a little um when this
10:21
is worked straight
10:23
across it's a little bit easier to see
10:25
because there's a slant these first few
10:28
rows with the ring it's going to look a
10:31
little um
10:33
less straight
10:37
across but as we're working let me get a
10:39
finished one and show you okay there two
10:43
and then there's the placement into my
10:45
little grouping that's how you're going
10:47
to get your fishtail kind of a
10:51
look so you see
10:54
here as you're working these
10:58
the stitches are lining let me come up a
11:01
little higher it's hard to see with the
11:03
white you can see they're lining
11:17
up finish the row by just working a
11:20
single crochet in the last
11:23
Stitch sure I get both loops on
11:27
hook not too tight
11:30
chain one
11:31
turn and I'll do it again with you
11:35
single crochet half double
11:38
crochet right now let's look at how the
11:43
grouping helps the
11:46
placement and I can see my V right here
11:49
because it's going to line up with where
11:51
that double crochet is going to go into
11:53
here so this top of the Stitch will get
11:57
split in half and that's where my hook
12:00
will
12:02
go y over go in there split that
12:06
Stitch pull
12:09
up
12:11
finish that skip to space work my next
12:19
grouping and there it goes right in
12:23
there the grouping from
12:26
below this is a nice meditative Stitch
12:29
once it's set up it's goes pretty
12:31
quickly and it's easy to
12:33
work so just want to make sure you have
12:35
your Stitch placement right so you're
12:37
not stressing about getting it right and
12:39
getting this texture that you
12:43
see into my little gripping there so
12:46
just keep working these back and forth
12:48
until you reach the length you want now
12:50
the length I'm showing before The Fringe
12:55
is about 9 in
13:01
total so if you have a really big book
13:03
or you have big books that you want to
13:06
be able to use this for you can go
13:08
longer but before The Fringe you see
13:10
it's right at about 9 in and then my
13:12
Fringe is about 4 in cuz I like to be
13:15
fancy sometimes but I I love my wood
13:18
beads is if you're new to my channel you
13:20
don't know I do a lot with wood so I've
13:22
got the wood ring and then these are
13:23
Dollar Tree wood beads that came in a
13:27
big pack like this I'm not sure what
13:29
size these are I could do a measurement
13:31
for you these are there's three sizes in
13:33
this and they're in the do25 section in
13:35
the craft area let me
13:43
see not half it I'd say 3/4 of an
13:48
inch let's look at the centimeter maybe
13:50
that'll be
13:54
better almost a centimeter but enough so
13:57
I can fit a generous amount across
13:59
without being too
14:02
many and of course you don't have to do
14:04
that but I like the look of it just
14:06
personal preference this might be a
14:08
little too fussy for some of
14:10
you right so I'm going to keep working
14:12
this and I'll come back and I will show
14:13
you how I do my Fringe and then of
14:14
course we have to do our finish so that
14:16
this isn't flaring out but rather that
14:18
it just sits
14:21
straight right so I finished my length
14:24
how long I want it and it's the 9 in
14:27
total so of course go longer if you
14:29
would like and I'm going
14:33
to start
14:36
working slip stitches up the side nice
14:39
and
14:45
loose and make sure you have enough so
14:48
that your bookmark does not
14:51
buckle you want to watch your spacing
15:02
just
15:03
oops just like
15:09
so I'm having trouble with this one here
15:11
we go
15:29
now as I come up closer this is where it
15:31
starts to narrow in so I'm going to
15:33
switch to single crochet to
15:37
finish these last couple of stitches of
15:40
the body and work my way
15:43
around the circle so I make sure I get
15:46
into every
15:50
Stitch and this will fill out the
15:54
bookmark to look like a perfect
15:57
rectangle or close
16:26
enough and then now as I come around
16:29
back to the side gonna look carefully
16:32
make
16:34
sure that I switch back
16:37
to slip stitches after not yet I'm going
16:40
to do one more here kind of the neck of
16:46
things and
16:48
then this one needs I think another one
16:51
to look full enough then I will slip
16:54
switch switch back to my slip stitches
16:59
down the
17:03
side nice and easy not too
17:19
tight okay so now I'm at the bottom and
17:23
I'm going to chain one and single
17:26
crochet
17:27
across you you can do once or twice and
17:31
then this is where um I will add my
17:35
Fringe if you're not adding Fringe you
17:38
can stop at this
17:43
point and do your rose
17:45
across and then you're done
17:59
I'll just slip here into the edge make
18:01
sure that it's nice and
18:26
even and then you'll cut some lengths
18:28
yarn to put through the
18:31
bottom and I did 8 in length or
18:37
thereabouts and then each one of my
18:39
beads has three strands through
18:45
[Applause]
18:47
it I'll pull out
18:50
my larger beads
18:55
[Applause]
19:18
I'm going to take my Nifty 2 mm hook
19:20
this is my favorite finishing tool and
19:23
this also will fit through the holes in
19:25
the beads because tapestry needles
19:28
typically do not fit but the little slim
19:32
hook always fits so that's what I will
19:39
use and then when threading make sure
19:41
you get both of the loops on the hook
20:21
right so I've got three
20:23
strands and my
20:26
hook with the bead on it and I'm going
20:30
to pull
20:47
through I'll check
20:50
my this one I pulled a little too
20:56
much pull on a different string and I'm
20:59
going to just double check everything
21:00
before I knot it
21:03
now what I did when I knotted my first
21:06
one and if you uh if you're looking at
21:08
the written pattern you'll see I say to
21:10
let it drop down from the base just a
21:12
little bit so I didn't knot it all the
21:14
way up snuggly up here just let it come
21:17
down just a little bit before you do
21:19
your securing knot just to give it a
21:22
little more balance and visual
21:25
interest but it's up to you if you like
21:28
it or just flush against the base
21:30
certainly do it that way but if you like
21:32
how mine looks that's how I did it that
21:34
was intentional to let it kind of drop
21:37
just a bit away from the
21:46
body right I'm going to keep putting
21:48
these beads
21:49
on and knot it and then this is done I
21:53
hope you enjoy your
21:55
bookmark give this video a like if you
21:58
enjoy it and if you don't have the
22:01
written pattern it is linked below
